Five Tips to Help You Swim Like a Pro

Summer has arrived, and the pool is calling your name. Whether you鈥檙e swimming laps to keep fit or to get race-day ready, it鈥檚 important to perfect your form before diving into the sparkling blue waters. Here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Work Smarter, Not Harder

If you're feeling exhausted after a few laps, your technique is probably to blame. Work with your coach and/or an experienced swimmer to learn how to swim correctly and efficiently. Even just a few tweaks to your technique could make all the difference.

  2. Get Camera Ready

Lights, camera, action! Grab a friend with a camera or smartphone to get some back-and-forth footage of your swimming form. You may be surprised to find the images on screen don鈥檛 quite measure up to how you picture yourself in the pool.

  3. Go Back to School

If you're looking to make a big splash as a competitive swimmer, your best first step is to join a local U.S. Master's Swimming class where you can learn from experts, follow a training program, and make new friends who can hold you accountable.

  4. Load Up Your Pool Bag

Once you've mastered your form, it's time to step up your game with training aids such as fins, paddles, and a kickboard. These accessories can help build power and strength as you move forward in your training program. But only start using them once you鈥檝e perfected your technique.

  5. Avoid the Swimmer's Shoulder

The dreaded "swimmer's shoulder" can derail your training goals. To avoid this common injury, focus less on speed and distance and more on your form. Be sure to listen to your body. Any sharp or throbbing pain is your cue to stop.
