Hospice Vs. Palliative Care

Palliative care is a service offered to any ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ with a life-limiting illness. It can be offered at the same time as curative or life prolonging treatment.

Hospice care is palliative care at the end of life. It is usually an option when a ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ has a life expectancy of fewer than six months.

Concurrent care is an insurance benefit offered by select public and private insurance companies that allows for both curative, life prolonging care and hospice care to be provided at the same time.  Concurrent care still stipulates that a ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ must have a life expectancy of fewer than six months.

The graph on the right shows how a palliative care team can provide care and support to a ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ throughout their life from diagnosis to after death in bereavement support for their family.

Hospice settings and home-hospice care provide extensive services to terminally ill ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵren. Care usually involves relieving symptoms and providing psychological and social support for the patient and family. In addition, hospice philosophy provides for the spiritual and cultural needs of your ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ and family. The goal of hospice care is to provide the terminally ill patient peace, comfort, and dignity.

Research has shown that hospice care at home helps a family as a whole. In addition to being in the comfort of the home, family members can also take an active role in providing supplemental, supportive care to the patient.
