Meet Sheryl Salmon, RN, a Nurse Manager at Huntsman Mental ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Institute (HMHI). We asked Sheryl a few questions about her work at HMHI and what she enjoys doing when she's not working.
Please introduce yourself.
I am Sheryl Salmon, Nurse Manager of our 4 North and 4 South inpatient treatment units. At HMHI, we have six distinct inpatient units to meet the needs of our patients. On 4 North, we help women suffering from perinatal mental health disorders and individuals who have been diagnosed with mood disorders. On 4 South, we help individuals recovering from addiction and detoxing from chemical dependencies, as well as, individuals who have comorbid diagnoses of both mental and physical conditions.
I have worked at HMHI for the past 12 years! HMHI is a rare and amazing environment where I am surrounded by compassionate caregivers, ongoing education, and people who have trusted us to help them during their most vulnerable times. I love the art of listening and getting to know the person beyond the symptoms of illness. Even the simple acts of providing support, education, validation, and hope can and do change people's lives. We can make a positive difference—differences we know about and those we may not, but they are there.

What do you love most about the work that you do?
I appreciate that there is always such an opportunity to learn in this ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ setting and be a part of excellence and evolving practices. There is a synergy in working with others who are committed to that same excellence. My greatest passion is working with staff members. It is my great honor to work with, know and watch them master new skills, demonstrate kindness and compassion, achieve new degrees, and advance to new positions. I feel joy and satisfaction in acknowledging and celebrating those achievements with staff and in knowing all HMHI stands for is carried forward.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
I lead a simple life outside of work and enjoy time with my family and friends. I enjoy art projects, movies, reading books, and creative writing. My latest source of joy is dabbling in fusing glass art and pottery projects…. none of which I am good at, but one can practice…and hope.
